Mr. Pleascha's Walk by John Burningham

Mr. Pleașcă is going on a boat ride and everyone wants to come with him. There isn't much room, but if the passengers are understanding, it will be a nice and quiet river ride. What if not?

For a while, they floated happily together, but then... the goat stamped its hoof, the calf stamped, the chickens flapped their wings, the sheep bleated, the piglet rolled, the puppy nagged the cat, the cat chased the bunny, the bunny hopped, the children took to the map, the boat tilted...

This story, told with a lot of humor by John Burningham, can be a very attractive and easy to understand way to talk to young children about an essential aspect for a harmonious integration in society: what rights and what responsibilities do we have in our relationships with others?

The good Mr. Plească does not refuse any of those who want to come with him for a boat ride. He doesn't care that some have hands, some have wings, some have claws, some have hooves — all Mr. Pleașcă wants is for them to follow a few simple rules.

Why? Why are there so many rules in the world? And do we really have to respect them, even as children? Yes, we must, Mr. Pleașcă's story tells us, if we want to live together, no matter how different we are, and enjoy everything that life offers us. Otherwise, the boat we're all in capsizes.
